Shakespeare's Nigga arose out of wanting to give voice to one of Shakespeare's iconic black characters,"Aaron". It represents in many ways the relationship that artists of colour have with classical work.
It is a play about power/control. It is a play about the relationship between an artist and the characters in his head.
Initially it was a challenge to trust in the direction the work was leading me, but that hesitation gave way to a sense of freedom.
This is a play still doused with a hip-hop swag, just in a different way
